Muscular Dystrophy Association

Muscular Dystrophy Association New Zealand is a member led organisation for people with lived experience of neuromuscular conditions and those who support them. MDANZ provides support for people living with a wide range of neuromuscular conditions. These conditions are classified into the following categories:

  • Muscular Dystrophies – all types including myotonic dystrophy
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophies – all types including Kennedy’s disease
  • Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias (HSP)
  • Leucodystrophies – all types
  • Metabolic muscles disease including mitochondrial myopathy 
  • Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies – including all types of Charcot- Marie – Tooth – Disease
  • Myopathies
  • Inherited ataxias – Friedreich ataxia, spinocerebellar ataxia, CANVAS
  • Neurocutaneous syndromes – neurofibromatosis type 1
  • Myasthenia Gravis      
  • Inflammatory Myopathies

 MDANZ has a National Office based in Auckland and four regional offices Northern, Central, Canterbury and Southern. MDANZ supports individuals, families and whānau by providing specialist information, practical resources, personalised support services, social networks, campaigns for public awareness and advocacy. And through our research trust, we work to improve care standards and facilitate access to potential treatments for neuromuscular conditions.

Our services are targeted toward individuals and whānau with lived experience of a neuromuscular condition covered by MDANZ.

Our regional branches also provide community level support for members with conditions and those close to them, offering camps and social events.   Our organisation is a registered charity and we rely almost entirely on voluntary donations from the general public, trusts and other businesses/organisations to continue our work.
